A-CELT: The ATI Certificate in English Language Teaching

The ATI Certificate in English Language Teaching (A-CELT) is a highly practical course-based qualification which provides in-service teacher training and development for English language teachers. The coursework and teaching are internally assessed. There is no written examination. This course is intended to be the same level as the Cambridge English ICELT Course.

How A-CELT will contribute to your development as a teacher:

The A-CELT course is aimed for teachers with different levels of previous teaching experience. It is designed to help teachers develop in the context within which they are currently working.

Our aim on the A-CELT is to help you reflect on your teaching practice and explore your beliefs regarding teaching and learning. Similarly, we will help you see how your lessons fit into your curriculum at your institution (i.e. how the lessons build up on each other) and raise your awareness of teaching and learning objectives. Through the input sessions, tutorials, detailed lesson planning, as well as written language tasks and methodology assignments you will develop your professional skills in:

a) reflecting on teaching and learning;

b) identifying and catering for the needs of your group of learners;

c) developing a better understanding of the underlying reasons for your learners’ language problems;

d) providing practical solutions to your learners’ problems;

e) understanding and using ELT terminology.

In the teaching component part, you will receive guidance and input on planning lessons according to the needs of your learners and your course timetable fit in different areas such as vocabulary, grammar, receptive and productive skills using institutional course-books. Likewise, through the individual pre- and post-conferences with your personal tutor you will develop a better understanding of the stage aims in your lesson plan and how they contribute to your learners’ learning.

The A-CELT course aims to:

  • give all CPs a solid grounding in ELT methodology and teaching principles
  • give CPs more awareness of YLs and their students' learning
  • introduce CPs to more learner-centred teaching techniques
  • help CPs with purposeful teaching and lesson planning
  • help CPs in using instructional technology
  • help CPs reflect on and improve their own teaching techniques
  • enable CPs to practise new techniques in their own classes
  • improve CPs teaching skills and ultimately improve MC students' performance
  • give all CPs a solid grounding in:
    • how to write tests
    • how to design a curriculum
    • how to write materials
